Carno Company Shop
Carno Shop at Twyn Carno, a relic of the absolute dominance that the Rhymney Iron Company ‘Company Shops’ had on its workers, where anything from a matchstick to a shroud and coffin could be purchased and ewhich once boasted its own cande making workshop. It was here, in 1835, that the astue Andrew Buchan introduced the Truck System, largely ignoring the 1831 Truck Act which had outlawed the system. His persistence with this penuric method of trading, which tied workers’ wages to ‘the shop’, led in 1886 to the celebrated ‘Rhymney Truck Case’ which once and for all ensured that ‘there shall be no more Truck at Rhymney’.
